THE FACADETHE BRIEF
‘The facade’ was created in response to a brief
asking to investigate the relationship between identity
and fashion. As a team, we researched an area of
interest within fashion identity, one we described
as ‘the facade’.

THE APPROACH‘The Facade’ describes someone who hides behind
their clothing, and uses it as a front to their real, authentic self.

RESEARCH
As this project was a group project, my teammates and I began our research by looking into ourselves and how we think we use fashion to display our personal identity. We also conducted some primary research on consumers, questioning their identity and how it correlates to the way they dress. Something that we found in almost all of our consumers was the use of garment to hide our true selves, to fit into the mainstream and crowd.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENTTo visualise this into an exhibition piece, we carried out a photoshoot subjecting a ballet dancer performing her craft, but seeming lost and melancholy in the process. The muted, simple images connote the grey sadness of someone hiding behind their clothes, constantly performing without showing their true identity. This shows the deeper meaning behind wardrobe and persona, as people can be characterised and generalised, loosing their true essence and being in the process.

THE OUTCOMESThe primary outcome for this brief was a photoshoot which was shown in the Newton building on the Nottingham Trent University City Campus. However, my team and I also put together a zine showcasing all of the images and some information for further understanding. The images were beautifully laid out in a publication, also allowing a larger scope of images to be shown.

Another secondary outcome was the gif (left). This overlaid a stage curtain over the fading images, further connoting the element of hiding behind your garments.

MY PART TO PLAY
As this was a group brief, I worked alongside 4 peers in a team to generate ideas and work on the overall outcomes, however I did play my individual part. I largely worked behind the camera capturing the images and directing the model. I also put the zine together with one other teammate, collating our skills to bring together the best possible publication.
